Single layer linear polyethylene is an excellent material for our smaller kayaks like the Otter, providing the ideal combination of durability at an affordable price. An aluminum keelson is used in the Otter to give additional stiffness to the hull.

Applying years of expertise in 3-layer rotomolding, our R&D team has designed a process to create a variable layer boat. This process is done by optimizing our 3-layer process to so each area of a boat gets exactly what it needs, for increased durability where necessary and lower weight in areas not needing reinforcement. This advancement gives us a 10% weight savings over single-layer polyethylene of the same stiffness.

A top quality fiberglass composite kayak can only come from a top quality mold, and at Old Town, we pride ourselves on our ability to produce and maintain excellent quality molds. The production process begins by spraying gelcoat into a highly polished mold. After curing the gelcoat; resins and cloth layers are meticulously hand-laid into the mold. Core materials are inserted mid-process that greatly strengthen and reduce weight. Our advanced methods deliver the highest quality finish possible.
